Stacks_of_money

With all the talk about austerity measures, cut backs, budget restrictions green issues seem to have been pushed to the back of our minds. The momentum of the early 2000s seems to have been lost and people are, understandably, looking after number 1.

However most day to day environmentally positive actions do cost no money and some can actually save you money. Putting your glass in a bottle bank and not the normal rubbish is a classic example, using paper that is clean on one side as scrap paper to write on is easy and not turning on lights when you do not need to.

Actions to make your house fuel efficient may seem out of reach in the current climate (forgive the pun) but may countries offer grants for this work and saving on fuel bills can be seen very quickly.

Austerity does not have to mean green is out of the window. SupaSwap´s message is, yes take care of yourself but do not forget the planet.

Minke1

Being Whale fans here at Supa Swap we are pleased to discover that a new hybrid whale has been found.

Hybrid

The cross between the Antarctic Minke whale and the Northern Minke whale was found during a DNA test of whales caught by hunters. The Northern Minkes go to the North Pole in Spring, and head south for the winter. The Antarctic Minkes do the same thing but at opposite ends of the hemisphere, leaving them miles apart, so discovering a hybrid of the two was surprising.

Minke

Shock

So during a routine DNA check, carried out by the Norwegian's they were shocked to discover the hybrid, it did not have the distinctive white patch on its pectoral flippers, and was a slightly different colour, but they are still looking into how this could of happened when they migrate so far apart.

Could it be they are just revolving, and tricking us into false speculations.

Supa Swap will keep you informed.

LED

Driving down every road, passing every street corner at night, how we take for granted just what lights our way, street lights.

Discovery

Supa Swap discover that street lights account for a staggering 160 terawatt hours or electricity use worldwide each year. That is more than the annual output of three dozen power plants. Although street lighting accounts for just 1 percent of the worlds usage of electric, it is hard to imagine how much global waste is produced for the amount of electric we consume.

Economic Climate

So in tough economic times, cities are pulling together and starting to invest in LED lighting, as they are much cheaper and last longer. Communities can save a huge 500 million per year on electric costs alone just by changing the lamps they use on the streets.

Not Just Screwing in a New Light

ED cost much more initially to install. Replacing the traditional bulb was just a case of unscrewing and replacing, but the LED system involves changing the whole fitting and is a sealed circuit board type and the life span is not yet known. This is still early days but can save huge amounts of consumption. This is a long time period at it take average 7 years for one LED bulb to save the energy it would use in the conventional bulb, so it may be exciting news in this ever saving energy world, however it is still early days.

china

Supa Swap discoverd that in China, which in winter can be desperately cold, things are being done to help save on heating bills, and help the environment.

In the North-East of China, winter temperatures drop to a staggering -42 degrees.

Cities are now getting facelifts on their older and less insulated buildings and Harbin have spent a massive 1.1 million dollars to re-fit and re-furb 2 million sq meters of buildings.

What Are They Doing?

These days , attention is being brought to the buildings of China's industrial north-east. This is the country's rust belt, where cold fronts roll in directly from Siberia's frozen tundra to the north, and residences need to be heated six months out of the year.

In 2006, as part of the country's most recent five-year plan, China pledged to reduce overall energy usage by 20 percent.

Still, this progress might not necessarily result in energy savings, because living standards are increasing. China is adding new buildings at a rate of 2 billion new square meters a year, which means more concrete being poured, more steel being manufactured, and additional mass consumption of energy. At the same time, residents these days expect more air conditioning, lighting, and heat than ever before.

Famous last words

So it seems that the more they save on heating older buildings, the more that will be used in constructing newer and more modern equipped homes.

Makes you think that are we really saving money, or just making the world a more comfortable place?
